AI And Beauty Standards
For many internet and social media users, a gap exists between the content promoted to them and their culture or identity. For most, the algorithm tends to promote Western standards of beauty through recommended content, search results, and even photo filters. With the rise of AI content, that gap is growing larger.
My Process
For this campaign, I needed to create multiple touchpoints as part of a cohesive group. I wanted to use a glitch effect to represent technology, but also because glitches are associated with mistakes. I decided to use that as a headline to show people that no one is a glitch and that AI should not promote Western beauty standards above other cultures.
Final Design
The final touchpoints are all part of a guerrilla-style campaign raising awareness about how AI and algorithms push Western beauty standards. I created the video as a campaign commercial satirizing how filters can be whitewashing. The poster is a woman glitching out, almost as if she is being erased or pulled off the page, representing the general idea of Algorithmic erasure of non-Western culture and standards. The subway billboard demonstrates how search engines and algorithms prioritize Western standards above others.
